2. Adherence to UK Legal and Regulatory Compliance
Calm Leaf operates with full transparency and adheres to the governing bodies and regulations of the United Kingdom — primarily the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), and the Home Office.
A. Controlled Substance Compliance (THC Limits)
Compliance regarding the controlled substance Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is managed through two distinct legal thresholds in the United Kingdom:
Our raw material is derived from industrial hemp grown under a Home Office licence. This requires the plant to contain no more than 0.2% THC by dry weight and to be from an EU-approved variety listed on the EU Common Catalogue. This ensures the source material is lawful at the point of cultivation.
All Calm Leaf finished consumer products contain no more than 1 milligram of controlled cannabinoids (including THC) per container or product unit. This is the definitive legal threshold under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, which renders our products lawfully exempt from control.
Reference: Misuse of Drugs Act 1971; Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 (as amended).
B. Sourcing and Traceability
Calm Leaf sources its CBD ingredients from established UK and EU suppliers operating to recognised food safety and quality standards.
Traceability. We maintain complete traceability of every CBD extract back to its supplier, batch, and lot number, so any finished product can be tied directly to the raw material and lab report behind it.
C. Health and Medicinal Claims (MHRA & ASA)
In the United Kingdom, only licensed medicines may make claims relating to the treatment, cure, or prevention of disease. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regulates medicinal products; the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) regulates advertising and product marketing claims.
No medical claims. Calm Leaf does not make any unauthorised medical or health claims about its products. Our CBD products are sold strictly as food supplements (oils, gummies, capsules) or cosmetic skincare items (balms, creams) — not as medicines, treatments, or remedies.
Marketing guidelines. All product descriptions, advertising materials, and customer-facing communications are reviewed against current MHRA and ASA guidelines for CBD and food supplement products.
D. Quality Assurance and Testing
Our regulatory compliance is verified through rigorous independent testing at every stage of production:
1. Third-party laboratory testing. Every batch of raw CBD extract — and every finished consumer product — is sent to an accredited third-party laboratory for comprehensive analysis. We do not rely on supplier-provided certificates of analysis.
2. Certificate of Analysis (CoA). A Certificate of Analysis is generated for every batch. The CoA verifies the exact cannabinoid content (potency) and confirms that the total content of controlled cannabinoids is below the 1mg per container legal limit. It also reports on heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents, and microbial contaminants.
3. Customer access. Calm Leaf customers can request the Certificate of Analysis for any batch by emailing support@calmleaf.co.uk with the product name and the batch number printed on the product label.
How to read a Certificate of Analysis
A CoA is the lab report that accompanies every batch. Here's what to look for.
Match the product and batch to the label
The CoA should clearly identify the product name and batch number. Cross-reference these with the batch number printed on your product label. If they don't match, the document is not for that specific product.
Confirm cannabinoid content
Look for the 'Total CBD' and 'Total THC' rows. CBD content should match or exceed the label claim. The total controlled cannabinoid content must fall below the UK 1mg per container legal limit.
Review the safety panel
A complete CoA includes results for pesticides, heavy metals, microbial contaminants, and residual solvents. Each test should show 'Pass' or specific values within UK regulatory limits.
Verify the laboratory
The lab name, ISO 17025 accreditation, and signatory should be clearly displayed. CoAs from unaccredited laboratories carry less regulatory weight.
Request a Certificate of Analysis
Every Calm Leaf product has a CoA on file. Email us with the product name and batch number and we'll send the report as a PDF.
